Generate an API key
In Housecall Pro: My Apps, then Go to App store, then API Key Management (MAX plan). The MCP only needs a read-only key. Step by step.

Add the MCP
Paste the setup prompt into Claude and it connects itself. There's nothing to install and no account to create.

Ask about customers, jobs, invoices, estimates, employees, or the price book. Money comes back in plain dollars, date ranges are handled for you, and deleted jobs stay out of your totals.
Connect it to the assistant you already use
MCP, the Model Context Protocol, is the standard way an AI assistant plugs into an outside system. Anything that speaks it can talk to your Housecall Pro account through this server.
Claude Code
A single command in the terminal. No config file to find or edit.
Cursor
Speaks MCP over stdio, so it works the way Claude Desktop does.
Codex
One command registers it. Codex keeps its servers in TOML, not JSON, so a config copied from Claude will not work.
ChatGPT
Cannot run a local server, so it needs a different route. That page says plainly what does work instead.

Every one of these asks you first. Your assistant shows the change before it makes it, one at a time, and a read-only key makes them impossible at all. Writing needs a full-access key you generate yourself, so the decision stays yours before anything is installed.
Not on MAX? Part of this still works.
Housecall Pro puts API access on its MAX plan, so the MCP and most of the shelf need it. Export That Works does not. It reads a CSV exported from your own dashboard, never touches the account, and reports what is genuinely in the book before anything is spent.
Neither does the Any Plan pack: 4 paid skills that work from the same exported files. Unreachable customers, duplicate records, agreements lapsing or unsigned, and a campaign list that honours every do-not-contact mark in the file. No key, no plan change.
Those export buttons were confirmed on a MAX-plan dashboard. Housecall Pro decides which exports each plan carries, and that has not been verified below MAX, so check the dashboard for the file a skill names before buying it. Each skill names the one it reads.

anything, and the quirks that quietly corrupt your totals: job numbers written as

When you reach the edge of the API
The free MCP is the Housecall Pro public API, done correctly, and for most questions that is the whole answer. Then there is a wall. Equipment and how old each unit really is, service plan visits, Property Profile data: none of it is on the public API, so no MCP reaches it, and neither does Zapier, a dashboard export, or a script you write yourself. A hosted backend covers that ground, and your own agent connects straight to it, the same way it connected to the free one.

Straight answers
Do I need the MAX plan?
For the MCP and most of the shelf, yes: Housecall Pro puts API access on its MAX plan. Two things do not need it. Export That Works is free and reads a CSV exported from the dashboard, and the Any Plan pack is 4 paid skills that work the same way, on any plan, without touching the account.
Can it change my account?
Not out of the box. Reading is all a read-only key permits. Writing requires a full-access key generated by the account owner, and every change is shown in full and confirmed one at a time before it is made.
Can you see my info?
No. The MCP is open source and runs on your own machine with your own key. It talks to Housecall Pro directly, and nothing routes through a server on this end. Your AI provider does see whatever you ask it about, the same as any other prompt, because that is where the answer is written.
Which AI assistants work with it?
Anything that speaks MCP. Claude Desktop and Claude Code first, then Cursor. ChatGPT cannot run a local server, so it takes a different route.
What does it cost?
The MCP is free and open source, permanently. Skills come in packs of two to five, grouped by the job they finish: $34 to $49 a pack at half price while the shelf is new, or $149 for lifetime, which covers every pack plus every skill released afterwards. All future updates to a purchase are included. A pack that does not earn its price on a book is refunded on request. Lifetime covers skills. Credits and the hosted MCP subscription are separate.
Is this an official Housecall Pro product?
No. hcpapi is an independent project, built by a business that runs on Housecall Pro daily and wanted to ask its own book more questions than the dashboard answers.
